Michael Allen wins after shooting 201 at the Encompass Insurance Pro-Am of Tampa Bay
Michael Allen won the Encompass Insurance Pro-Am of Tampa Bay, as he shot a 68 in the final round on Sunday, April 15, 2012.
The 53-year-old American professional golf player displayed an amazing performance at the TPC Tampa Bay in Lutz, Florida. He scored a 12-under 201 on the leaderboard and won by three strokes against Kenny Perry.
“It’s been a long time since I beat these guys,” Allen said. “I haven’t beaten them very often. It’s very nice to get on 18 and finally go, `man, I got them all”’.
Allen scored consistently in the three-day tournament that was staged by the Champions Tour in the US. He achieved an early lead on Friday after making eight birdies. He lost his focus two times, carding a bogey and a double-bogey at day-end.
After hitting a -5, he played a bogey-free second round and added a 4-under par score. He recorded two birdies and an impressive long yard eagle on the 12th hole, on Saturday.
He was on the top of the leaderboard after two rounds. He maintained his domination and shot a 3-under 68 in the final round.
Allen's aim was to win the event with a massive five-stroke lead. However, he did not achieve his goal. He came quite close to it and ended the round with a lead of three strokes.
“I’ve never had a five-shot lead,” Allen said. “Fuzzy (Zoeller) told me to play like I was broke, so I tried to do that. You never quite know what you really have to do until it’s over”.
This was his second victory at the Champions Tour. Last time, he won the title of the Senior PGA Championship in 2009. He had been striving to win the title since then.
“To be honest, I’ve played a lot of really good golf out here and I knew it was going to come again soon,” Allen said.
Allen's performance in the current year is very attractive. He has played six events at the Champions Tour so far and finished all among the top leaderboard positions.
Among six events, he won one and was the runner-up at Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic. He also recorded a third-position finish at the Mitsubishi Electric Championship and the Allianz Championship.
He is giving his best in 2012. There are many upcoming events scheduled for the current year and if he continues his stunning performance, he is definitely expected to grab titles in the upcoming events.
