Michael Atherton terms Ian Bell’s dismissal and recall as subversion of laws – Cricket News Update
Michael Atherton, the former English captain, has come up with a dissenting view about Ian Bell’s dismissal and recall by Team http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 at Day 3 of the 2nd Test at Lord’s, as he opines that the controversial decision was a violation of the laws and
there was no spirit of cricket involved in it.
Atherton is the first one who has condemned the untoward incident. On the contrary, the entire cricketing fraternity is showering drums of praise over the Indian skipper, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MS-Dhoni-c2028, who, they think, displayed a lot of generosity by recalling Bell
to bat after his dismissal as run out.
On the last ball before the tea session yesterday, Bell’s batting partner, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Morgan-c77707. However, the ball was fielded near the boundary line and the Indians removed
the bails to dismiss Bell.
Bell was surprised at this happening. During the tea break, the English coach, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AJ-Strauss-c964, explained to Dhoni that Bell did not intend to take a run and the dismissal was unfair.
Thus, Dhoni decided to permit Bell to continue his lavish innings. Bell scored 159 to steer his side to take a big lead over the Men in Blue.
While some former players and cricket experts are commending Dhoni by terming his decision to be a gesture of the true spirit of cricket, Atherton has condemned the scene by saying, “Ian Bell's controversial non dismissal during the second test between http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c749
and India subverted the laws of the game and had nothing to do with the Spirit of Cricket.”
He further elaborated, “Things might have deteriorated had he not done so. Which is not to say he was right to do so. Bell was guilty of doziness and of forgetting the first rule that any young batsman is taught: you don't leave your crease while the ball
is still live.”
With the 1st Test won by England, the 2nd Test is underway at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. Today is the fourth day of the game and India has started their second innings to chase down a huge target.
