Michael Beasley files a countersuit against his former agent: NBA News
When Minnesota Timberwolves combo forward Michael Beasley left Bell Sports, Incorporation, the organization filed a lawsuit against the NBA player claiming that Michael has not paid the commission stemming from a marketing deal with Adidas.
Michael Beasley’s former agent Joel Bell asserted that the company owned 20 percent commission as they supposedly negotiated most part of the marketing deal.
However recently, the 22-year-old forward filed a countersuit charging that an American Athletic Union (AAU) coach and his former agent counterfeited a relationship with him when he was just 14 years old. Beasley further alleged that Joel Bell gave improper cash benefits and living expenses to his mother as well, a thing which is against the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) rules and regulations.
The lawsuit states that the Beasley grew up with a financially troubled single-parent in Washington D.C. The player had some academic and behavioural issues which caused him to attend six different schools within a span of five years. However Michael Beasley finally settled down in AAU, a school which also had the services of Kevin Durant at that time.
Later, the coach of AAU, Curtis Malone invited Beasley to join D.C Assault squad. Due to financial problems, Beasley’s mother didn’t have enough money to send his son to D.C Assault; however Malone assured him and his mother that they won’t have to pay anything as Adidas sponsors the team.
According to the lawsuit, it was Joel Bell, who was giving financial support to the Malone’s team hoping that the AAU coach will give his best player to him.
Beasley’s mother Fatimah Smith has backed the claim and revealed that she never had to worry about the house rent and car payments during Michael Beasley’s freshman year in the Kansas State.
Beasley stated that he was unaware of the financial support his mother was receiving until he signed the contract with Joel Bell to represent him in NBA.
AAU coach Curtis Malone has denied the allegation that he was involved with Joel Bell and believes that the lawsuit will be thrown out soon as it has no base.
"DC Assault has always been more than just basketball to me and the children that participate are family. My goal when creating DC Assault was to provide these children an opportunity to do something better with their lives on and off the court and that still is the case. I believe this case will ultimately be thrown out of court, because its premise is baseless. This will not stop me from continuing the mission of the DC Assault."
Whatever the case, Beasley is again in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.
