Michael Beasley signs with the Phoenix Suns – NBA Update
Michael Beasley has agreed to join the Phoenix Suns on a three year deal worth $18 million and is ready to put his past behind him. The official announcement of the deal was made on Friday and Beasley insisted that his drug addiction
days are a thing of the past.
"I realize 10 minutes of feeling good is not really worth putting my life and my career and my legacy in jeopardy," he said, "so I'm confident to say that part of my career, that part of my life, is over and won't be coming back."
Beasley had been charged for being in possession of marijuana and speeding in June 2011. He had also confirmed to have violated NBA’s drug policy while being a part of the Miami Heat and had to visit a treatment facility in 2009.
"I've really realized my potential," Beasley said. "I've really realized what I can do."
On the other hand, Suns general manager Lance Blanks had nothing but praise for the honesty and courage shown by Beasley. He feels that Beasley can put his past behind him and help Phoenix get a jumpstart in their re-building process.
"Regardless of his past and regardless of any thoughts that people may have," Blanks said, "we are excited, I know I am excited, to embrace everything he is about and most importantly wants to be as a Phoenix Sun."
Beasley was the overall second draft pick in 2008 but has failed to live up to his potential so far. Over the years, he has established the reputation of a selfish offensive player, who does not help on the D or in stretching the
court. He spent the first two seasons playing for Miami Heat and the last two for Minnesota Timberwolves, who refused to use their $ 8 million option of Beasley.
There is no doubt that Beasley has been a very good basketball player ever since his days in Kansas - the career averages of 15.1 points and 5.6 rebounds per game are mere proof of that fact. However after being involved in several
off the court issues, he has been unable to show his true potential on court. A change of scenery might help him put his career on the right track.
