Michael Berrer buries Ante Pavic in second round melee – Slovak Open 2011
Michael Berrer, German world No.106, overwhelmed his second round challenger of Slovak Open 2011, Ante Pavic, Croatian world No.474, pulling him down with a spectacular comeback in the second set to win, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, in a two
hour four minutes Indoor blue court match on Thursday, 17th of November 2011.
Commencing with the fixture, Pavic won the toss and took his side to serve the match starter, rolling down the scoreboard, 1-0. Berrer replied back right away winning his first game of the match with a triple game point winner,
1-0. Ranked world No.474, the 22-year-old Croatian took away the third game, however, was unable to captivate the lead for a long time.
Levelling back the scores, game four, German world No.106 bagged his second serve, 2-2, before he broke the lower ranked 22-year-old and led the board, 3-2. Holding his serve in game six, the veteran German knocked out his third
service game to lead the scores, 4-2.
Pavic struck back next, serving out game seven, 4-3, and breaking the higher ranked in game eight to level the scores at 4-4. The young Croatian went marvellous as he fought out game nine, to lead 5-4, and ended the set with a
spectacular breakpoint win in game ten, 6-4, and moved on to set two of the fixture.
Continuing with the second set, Berrer struck back and levelled up the match scores. Serving out first, Pavic took out game one; however, the scores were levelled up instantly by the German veteran, 1-1. Carrying on, Berrer broke
the lower ranked Croatian in game three, and served out game four, 3-1, and came up strong with a three game consecutive win.
Croatian did follow to cut the lead from 3-1 to 3-2, however, was unable to break back and level up any soon. The set moved on with the two bagging games of respective serves and eventually ended up with Berrer knocking down the
22-year-old old with a 6-4 win.
With the match moving towards a crucial third set decider, Pavic ignited serving out the first game of the set, followed by the higher ranked chasing and levelling the scores, 1-1. The two won a game each next on respective serve
to even up again at 2-2 before the higher ranked veteran turned the tables.
Breaking Pavic in game five, Berrer took the lead, 3-2, and served out game six extending his lead to 4-2. German did not stop yet as he broke back again to roll down the scores to 5-2. With one more game left and Berrer to serve,
the set ended at 6-2 in favour of the German world NO.106 winning the set and the match with a remarkable comeback.
Through into the quarter-final round of the ATP Challenger Tour event, Berrer will now play, Lukas Lacko for the semi-final round spot of Slovak Open 2011.
