Michael Berrer eases past Frank Dancevic to reach the quarters – Heilbronn Open 2012 CH
Germany’s Michael Berrer registered a comprehensive straight sets victory over the unseeded Canadian, Frank Dancevic, in the second round of the Heilbronn Open on Thursday. The sixth seed German battled for one hour and 41 minutes
of play to settle the final scores at 6-4, 6-4, booking a spot in the quarter-final of the tournament.
Being a part of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour, the competition was played on the hard courts of Heilbronn, Germany, with the home favourite winning in an assertive manner. Berrer faced limited resistance
from his opponent in the contest and cruised through the games to register an easy victory.
Berrer coughed seven double faults in the match but very well compensated for them by clinching 39 out of 58 first serve points en route to victory. He had eight opportunities to break the Canadian’s serve but only four conversions
proved sufficient for the German to close out the match in his favour.
The contest took off with aggressive tennis from both contestants, exchanging a number of winners and serve breaks to get early advantage in the match. Berrer nailed two cracking serve breaks right up to lead 3-0 in no time. His
onslaught was finally halted by a timely break point conversion from Dancevic in the fourth game to take the scores to 1-3.
The Canadian kept struggling for making a comeback in the game and after fighting three deuces in the sixth game, Dancevic finally broke the German serve to level the scores at 3-all. However, his run didn’t last for long, as Berrer
stung his third serve break in the very next game to lead 4-3. The unseeded Canadian couldn’t recover from the deficit this time round and eventually submitted the first set to the German at 4-6.
Dancevic held on to his opening two serves of the following set before giving away another striking chance to his opponent. Four deuces were followed by a crushing serve break from Berrer and he sustained the winning momentum until
the conclusion of the match at 6-4.
Berrer will take on his fellow compatriot, Cedrik-Marcel Stebe, in the quarter-final draw of the Heilbronn Open on Friday. The second seed Stebe was successful against the local wildcard entrant, Benjamin Becker, in close competition,
which finally ended after Becker pulled out of the match due to injury. Stebe cleared the second round to book an all-German affair in the quarter-final of the Challenger tournament in Heilbronn.
