Michael Berrer knocks down Paolo Lorenzi in straight sets in opener – Legg Mason Tennis Class 2011
Michael Berrer of Germany took his 1st round win over the Italian Paolo Lorenzi, Tuesday 2nd August, in the Legg Mason Tennis Classic 2011 winning 7-5 and 6-1. The match was played at the William H.G. Fitzgerald
Tennis Centre in Rock Creek Park on hard court. Berrer formed a strong offence against the Italian to skin him out in one hour and 17 minutes making his way to the next round.
Aged 31, Berrer got a lucky shot winning the 1st round fixture against the Italian. Although his performance in the previous 10 fixtures has been unsatisfying, the German played the best to score a win. Formerly the
world No.42, Berrer started off his career in 1999 but failed to win any major title on the go.
On the other hand, Paolo Lorenzi, a former world No.83, failed to put up a good fight and lost. The 29-year-old did prove to be a tough gun in the starting but soon broke down in the second set. Currently world No.141, Lorenzi
had a tough time playing on the hard surface.
Kicking off with the match, Berrer served first only to be broken by the Italian in the opening game of the match. Lorenzi then increased his lead to 2-0 winning the next game. Game 8 proved to be a table turner as the Italian
was broken by the German world No.85 to level the scores at 4-4.
The scores once again levelled at 5-5 as both played broke each other in game 9 and game 10. Berrer went strong as he won the following game and finally breaking the Italian in game 11 to clear the 1st set 7-5 and lead
1-0.
Lorenzi was stunned as the German came over him from nowhere. The second set was when the German reined misery on the Italian stallion. Serving first in the second set, Berrer rolled the scorecard and lead 1-0. Lorenzi had a knockdown
in the second game of the 2nd set as the world No.85 broke him down for the first time in set 2.
Increasing his lead to 3-0, the former world No.42 made it worst for the Italian. Finally the Italian got a breather as he won the 4th game of the set but that was the last he could win. Winning the next three games
including a breakpoint win in the 6th, the German won the second set 6-1 with a wild thrashing to the untamed Stallion.
The match ended up with score 7-5, 6-1 in favour of the German. Berrer now sits in the second round of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic to face Janko Tipsarevic, the Serbian.
