Michael Berrer loses to Daniel Brands in quarterfinal – IPP Open 2011
World number 105 German Michael Berrer and the seventh seed of IPP Open 2011 played the quarterfinal against younger compatriot Daniel Brands. The younger German ousted the seventh seed with a comeback in the latter two sets to
score 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, in an hour and fifty minutes on hard indoor courts at Tali, Helsinki, Finland on Friday the 25th of November 2011.
Starting the first round of the match, Brands, won the service toss, took his time to serve out the opening game and spun down the scoreboard at 1-0. Following the 24-year-old German, Berrer also rallied away with his primary serve
and placed himself at 1-1 after evening up the score.
Berrer got the desiderated break in the third game and then held his serve by battling a few deuces to take the primary mini lead on the scoreboard at the end of t he fourth game. The two then rallied out games holding their serves.
As the game progressed further without any breakpoints, the seventh seeded German was still leading.
During the opening round Berrer had skillfully smashed six breakpoints but with a faltering precision he also committed six double faults which lost him most of his points. Nonetheless he still had an impressive win of 86 percent
in his first service points. As the two continued to bag their service games at the end of the tenth game Berrer had clogged the opening round and took the completive edge by restricting his opponent to only four games.
Continuing with set two, Brands again managed to secure his opening serve, and was followed by the 31-year-old on the scoreboard as he evened up the scores right away. It was in the third game t hat Brands held his serve and then
broke the elder German to take the mini lead for the first time on the scoreboard. In the following two games, the players broke each other back-to-back and score had shifted to 4-2 at the end of the sixth game with Brands leading the set.
In the last three games the two compatriots met a blow for a blow and as they bagged their service games, Brand expertly secured the second round. By the end of the second set both the players had bagged a set each and the decisive
round was commenced by Berrer.
In the third set both the contestants held their respective serves for the first three games. They then bartered in breaks during the fourth and the fifth games. With a hold of serve in the sixth game, the score had levelled out
at three games each and then at four games. It was an extremely lucky day for Brands as he took two games to seal his victory in the match.
Through into the semi final of the ATP Challenger Tour event, Brand will now face compatriot Dustin Brown.
