Michael Berrer outplays Marco Chiudinelli in first round – PTT Thailand Open 2011
World number 88, Michael Berrer of Germany, stood victorious against Switzerland’s Marco Chiudinelli in the opening round clash of the PTT Thailand Open, in Bangkok, Thailand, on Tuesday afternoon.
The unseeded German displayed his magnificent tennis skills to wind up victory in straight sets 7-6(4), 6-3, taking one hour and thirty three minutes to book a spot in the second round of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals)
World Tour 250 event.
The contest was staged on the indoor hard courts of the Impact Arena, with the German competitor cruising to victory without much difficulty. It was the 14th victory for Berrer in the current season and the first one
against the Swiss opponent in singles encounters.
The German’s 69 per cent serve earned him 36 out of 48 first serve points in the game. He also fired seven cracking aces and successfully defended seven out of eight break points he faced in the contest. Berrer crafted two break
opportunities in the matchup and converted both of them en route to victory in straight sets.
Chiudinelli was off to a brilliant start in the opener, drawing first blood in the fourth game to lead 3-1 early but the German retaliated immediately with a break point conversion to bring him back on even terms. A regular game
was followed with both men holding their serves to drag the set in to a tie breaker round once the scores got dead locked at 6-6. Berrer took the better of his opponent in the decider and pocketed the first set at 7-6(4), to get the upper hand in the game.
The unseeded Swiss played competitive tennis in the following set as well, but was outdone by a timely serve break from Berrer in the eighth game. The German reeled off 17 out of 22 first serve points in the second set and served
out of the match comprehensively at 6-3 to register victory.
The ultimate test is yet to be taken by Berrer in the next round, as he will face the world number four, Andy Murray of the Great Britain, to battle for a place in the quarter-final draw of the PTT Thailand Open. Being the top
seed in the tournament, Murray received a bye to have a direct access to the second round of the tournament and a match against Berrer.
