Michael Berrer plonks Ivan Dodig to enter main draw – Rogers Cup 2012
German challenger, Michael Berrer, upset the qualifying 11th seed, Ivan Dodig, in straight sets at the Rogers Cup 2012 on Sunday. He juggled up a 6-3, 6-4 victory against the world number 100 to secure a spot in the main draw at this ATP (Association
of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Masters 1000 event held in Toronto, Canada.
The German underdog showed brilliant skills to outsmart Dodig in their second meeting. After dominating in this one and a half hour-long venture, Berrer not only avenged his loss at the Zagreb ATP event last season but also progressed into the main draw
at this outdoor hard court tournament.
The 32-year-old thundered into the Rexall Centre in Toronto. He cashed in the lone break chance in the second game to jump to a 2-0 lead. The German then plucked his entire serves without encountering any breakpoint, subsequently sealing the opener by winning
six games to three.
Ranked 131st in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Berrer carried his rhythm in the follow-up set. He earned the critical break in the opening game to take the initial lead. Despite losing his serve in the very next game, the German
maintained his composure and cashed in his second break chance in the fifth game. He held his remaining serves amazingly and clicked the set with a 6-4 win. Berrer showed spectacular defensive skills in this set as he brushed off 10 out of 11 breakpoints he
came across to earn the glory.
Overall, the German veteran spilled more double faults but clobbered a better first serve share of 61 per cent as opposed to his rival’s 57 per cent. He also tremendously marked 35 out of 45 points on it.
Next challenge for Berrer is the top seed, Novak Djokovic, who received a first round bye after being the top player here.
The qualifying fourth seed, Fabio Fognini, will accompany the German in the first round. He hit back to overpower America’s Bobby Reynolds in a three-set thriller to advance. The Italian seed lost his serve twice but capitalised on four out of seven break
chances to register a 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-4 victory.
