Michael Bevan wants new India coach Duncan Fletcher to carry forward Gary Kirsten’s legacy
Former Australian cricketer, Michael Bevan, welcomed Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) decision to appoint former New Zealand captain, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Duncan-c54739 Fletcher, as the new coach of the national team and Gary Kirsten’s successor.
The 62-year-old Zimbabwean, who coached the England cricket team for almost eight years from 1999 to 2007 with mixed results, was today named as World Cup winning India's coach for a two-year tenure.
The decision was taken by the BCCI at its working committee’s meeting held in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mumbai-c820 today and Bevan wanted Fletcher to carry forward the legacy left behind by the inspirational Kirsten.
"I don't really know about Fletcher's strengths but he was instrumental in turning around the fortunes of England side though. I wish him all the success in future. The new coach will need to carry the gains forward," said Bevan while talking
to the media reporters.
After stepping down as England's coach in 2007, Fletcher joined Cricket http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 in November last year. Most recently
he was working as Proteas batting consultant for the ICC World Cup 2011.
Bevan, who is coaching Priety Zinta’s IPL franchise Kings XI http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Punjab-c833 in the latest edition of the lucrative league, said he was never interested in taking over the coveted role after Kirsten’s departure.
"I didn't necessarily have my eyes on the Indian job,” said Bevan. CSK coach Stephen Fleming's capabilities are also not been heard beyond his capabilities in leading side in IPL,” he added.
The Australian feels the club over country debate could be avoided by creating a window for the IPL in the International Cricket Council’s Future Tour Programme (FTP).
"There is already a small window in the IPL and ICC is trying its best to accommodate the tournament in its packed calendar. If that can happen then situation like club over national duties could be sorted out,” said Bevan.
Former http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 captain, Kumar Sangakkara, also urged the ICC on Tuesday to include the lucrative Twenty20 league in its FTP calendar.
