Michael Bourn and Brett Myers spark as Houston Astros defeat Chicago Cubs, 3-1 – MLB Update
Houston Astros’ centre-fielder Michael Bourn and starter Brett Myers both were remarkable as Bourn hit two RBIs and Myers pitched six dominant innings with an ERA of 4.82 in the Astros’ 3-1 win over the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field, Chicago on June 1.
The Astros swept the three-game series 3-0 as the team performed very well to outclass the Cubs in each division. The Cubs started good, but unfortunately, they scored only one run throughout the game. In the first inning, the Cubs took a 1-0 lead when Kosuke
Fukudome hit a one-run homer (403 feet) towards centre-field.
During the second inning, the game was tied 1-1 when the Astros posted one run on the score-board. Jason Michaels struck a solo homer (389 feet) to right-field and provided an exciting moment in the game. Michaels commented on his homer and said, “That was
really big. This is a tough place to play and to come in and get a sweep, that's big.”
The batters failed to score even a single run from the third to sixth inning due to imposing throws of the pitchers. Myers gave away a single run on three hits with one earned run and one homer. He struck out three batters and allowed two walks on 98 pitches.
Myers commented on his feelings and said, “I used my head a little bit better. I have a pretty good feel pitching against these guys. I've faced them enough that I know how I want to pitch them. Whether it works or not, that's a different story.”
Seventh inning went in favour of the Astros as they were able to score a tie-breaking run along with a leading run. Jeff Keppinger and Chris Johnson both posted two runs collectively on the single-run shot of Bourn towards right-field. The score-card was
3-1 at the end of the seventh inning. The last two innings remained empty for both sides as the relievers threw exemplary pitches.
Bourn expressed his winning excitement and said, “We've been playing pretty good baseball lately. Throughout this series, everything has been going our way.”
Doug Davis was little bit shaky as he pitched six innings with an ERA of 5.95 and permitted three runs on eight hits with three earned runs. He did not give away any walk on 92 pitches.
