Michael Bradley wins Puerto Rico Open in a playoff against Troy Matteson – PGA Tour Update
The Professional Golfer’s Association Tour Championship of Puerto Rico Open concluded yesterday at the Trump International golf course. It was Michael Bradley who emerged victorious in a playoff with Troy Matteson. Bradley lifted the tournament trophy with
a smile and was overwhelmed with his second Puerto Rico championship.
Bradley and Matteson had the same scores after completing the final round. Their aggregate four-round score was sixteen-under par, 272. In the first playoff hole, Bradley took advantage of Matteson’s bogey to lift the title.
The veteran Bradley started the day tied at the second spot. He started the final round in a superb manner with three birdies and an eagle. His scorecard showed an eagle, four birdies followed by two bogeys. The only drop shots came on the par-4, 14th
and finishing par-5, 18th. Bradley’s final round of four-under par, 68 was enough for him to match up with the overnight leader Matteson. This was his second win in this tournament after two years. The American now has four PGA Tour victories under
his belt and is looking forward to play in next month’s Masters.
After winning in the playoff, Bradley said, "It would have been disappointing if I would have ended up losing the tournament because I missed that putt and then lost in the playoff. It would have been disappointing, but I don't have to worry about it anymore.
It worked out, I guess, in my favor."
As for the overnight leader Matteson, he was disappointed with the short par putt which he missed in the playoff. He had a rather moderate final round of even-par, 72 but failed to capture the opportunity which came his way. His score card shows two birdies
followed by two bogeys. The only two bogeys came on hole numbers 4 and 7. Matteson had a total aggregate score of 16-under par, 272.
There were two players who had to be content tied at the third spot. Canadian Stephen Ames and Hunter Haas of the USA had a four round score of fourteen-under par, 274. Ames had an excellent final round of six-under par, 66 which included seven birdies and
a single bogey. His only drop shot came on the par-4, 10th where his drive completely missed the fairway. The Canadian was satisfied with his overall performance during the tournament.
Two of the most experienced veterans were also participating in this championship. Masters champion Angel Cabrera of Argentina and The Open Championship winner Stewart Cink was also among the contenders.
Cink was the highest ranked player in the tournament, but failed to show his ability and class on the field. He started the tournament with a few under-par rounds, but thereon failed to continue his form. The PGA Tour player was tied at the 28th
spot.
Argentina’s ace player, Cabrera managed to finish among the top-10 on the leader board. He had a total aggregate score of eleven-under par, 277. The Argentinean had a rather steady final round of one-under par, 71 which included five birdies and four bogeys.
Bradley picked up a beautiful trophy along with the winner’s cheque of US$ 630,000.
