Michael Bradley wins playoff against Troy Matteson at the Puerto Rico Open
Michael Bradley surged into lead at the Puerto Rico Open after he won the playoff hole against Troy Matteson on Sunday.
The player earned $630,000 worth of prize money and 250 FedEx points.
Bradley walked towards the clubhouse of the Trump International Golf Club as the winner when he parred the extra hole he was awarded to settle score with Matteson who was early in the lead. Matteson missed the putt for par and settled with a bogey, which
eventually denied him the win.
Matteson lost the playoff hole, but he was not disappointed with his game. He said, “You know, I played okay. I just did not hit enough shots close to have chances. I left myself with a lot of up-and-over putts, a lot of breaking putts. Just didn't leave
myself with very many good looks, and then I had a good look on 16, a good look on 17 and just couldn't get them in. But I'm not disappointed with my play at all this week.”
Michael was not in the lead right from the start until he birdied the two opening holes on the front and eagled the par-5 fifth hole. He walked to the front with one more birdie and a score of five-under par. Bradley was on his way to a victory when he encountered
the same old problem he had been facing since three rounds- he could not tackle the faster and harder greens.
Bradley then tried putting up a fight against the windy conditions, but failed as he met the first trap on his way to the 14th fairway. Bradley drove the tee shot into a bunker, which eventually forced him down the leaderboard.
The runner-up did not let the bogey break his pace and hit a crisp iron shot on the immediate hole to sign for a birdie. The birdie took the player into a one-stroke lead, but a late blow on the closing hole forced the tournament into a playoff.
On the other hand, Matteson parred the course after countering off two bogeys with equal birdies in the front. The player failed to pick a single point on the back and hence was forced by Bradley into a run for an extra hole.
