Michael Campbell to play in the Iskandar Johor Open
New Zealand’s Michael Campbell has committed to participate in the sixth edition of the Iskandar Johor Open, scheduled to start from December 13, 2012.
The Asian Tour event will be played at the Horizon Hills Golf and Country Club, offering a purse of US$2 million.
Campbell is known as one of the most successful Kiwi players, the game of golf has ever produced. In 2005, he won the US Open and became the only New Zealander to record a major golf championship victory in 30 years.
The same year witnessed him register a win in the HSBC World Match Play Championship, and a sixth-place finish in the PGA Championship.
Since turning professional in 1993, he has won a total of eight European Tour tournaments and earned three victories on the European Challenge Tour.
In addition to that, he also tasted success on the PGA Tour of Australasia by winning seven professional tournaments.
In 2008, he started losing grip on his clubs, and went out of the scene due to poor performances. He spent almost five years without a single top-10 finish, and now looks to return to winning form on the European Tour.
Recently, he finished third in the Portugal Masters after posting a 12-under par tournament score. Therefore, his current form can prove ominous for other participants when Iskandar Johor Open kicks off next month.
Talking to the Asian Tour’s official website, he stated that his experience of playing golf in Malaysia will provide him advantage over his competitors in the field. In 1995, he won the Dunhill Masters, which speaks of his success in the region.
“I have always enjoyed playing in Malaysia but it will be my first time playing the Iskandar Johor Open and I am looking forward to being a contender.” He said. “My game is in a good place at the moment and I am looking to continue the momentum I’ve
gained from solid performances over the past few months”.
He added, “It would be great to end the year with a victory at Horizon Hills Golf Club so I’ll be going all out to achieve it”.
The reigning British Open champion, Ernie Els, is another big name who has already confirmed to participate in the season-ending Asian Tour event this year.
