Michael Carrick aims for the Champions league
Manchester united midfielder Michael Carrick aims to reach the Champions league final for yet another team; with Manchester United in order to eradicate the mistake made last time in Rome.
United managed to reach the Champions league final twice in a row In the 07/08 and 08/09 season but managed to win only one. The midfielder stated that the final in Rome was perhaps the worst night of his career and looks for more Champions league glory
with United.
United managed to edge past Valencia last time in the Champions league and would now be facing Bursapor twice. The Turkish side has not managed to win a single match in the European competition and should they loose back to back to the English Giants, United
would be sailing to the knockout stage with a 10 point margin. The midfielder thus believes that playing the Champions league final in Wembley would be the perfect way for retribution and forget about what happened against the Spanish Giant two seasons ago.
"Rome is the biggest disappointment I have had. It came and went and it was too late. It was gone. The thing was, we were so much on top at the start. Gerard Pique cleared one off the line and we had all the pressure. Then they scored and we know how it
went after that,” claimed the midfielder. The player added that things got out of hand after the first goal and the game went past them in a flash. However, in the wider perspective, it was the Champions league final and his side were proud to be part of it.
"But we know we did not do ourselves justice and we want to get there again to try and put it right," stated the midfielder. It was just 12 months ago when goal keeper Edwin Van Der Sar provided United with the glory of the Champions league trophy, when
he saved a Nickolas Anelka penalty. However, at Rome, things were completely opposite with nothing but despair and agony to be experienced in the post-match function.
"It was pretty quiet for a good few hours afterwards," said Carrick.
"You do try to get yourself round and look at the positives but it wasn't something I would like to go through again. It was pretty horrible. Everyone felt the same way because the whole occasion had been such a let down," stated Michael Carrick.
Last season, United had a very good chance to make it into the Champions league final and looked on their way for a third consecutive Champions league semi final when they scored three in quick succession at Old Trafford. However, Munich sought a come back
and managed to win the bout on away goals. This signifies the ever increasing competition in the Champions league and that is the reason why Sir Alex Ferguson would want to take nothing for granted at Bursapor on Wednesday.
With most of the players available for the fixture, Ferguson would be looking to test out the strength and depth in the squad and goal scorer Javier Hernandez can expect his first start owing to the goal which led to a win against Spanish Champions Valencia
few weeks ago.
