Michael Carrick facing three weeks on sidelines
English Premier League giants Manchester United have suffered a blow with the news that midfield stalwart Michael Carrick has been ruled out of action for three weeks though injury.
The player has only featured in one of United’s three league games so far this season as a substitute, but started in the FA Community Shield victory over Chelsea.
However, an Achilles problem has seen him have an injection and will be resting for the next few weeks. It means that he will miss crunch league ties against Everton and Liverpool as well as United’s opening match of the UEFA Champions League campaign against Rangers.
'A little setback'
Red Devils manager Sir Alex Ferguson told a press conference ahead of tomorrow’s match against Everton that: "We have had a little setback with Michael Carrick. He's had a problem with his Achilles, it's been bothering him for a few weeks now and we sent him to a specialist in London yesterday. He's had an injection and we're hoping that settles him down. He'll be out for maybe three weeks, at the very most a month. We've been considering for a while what we should do about it. I think the best thing to do, with everyone else fit in the squad, is to get him treated and get it out of the road."
The midfielder was named in Fabio Capello’s England squad to face Bulgaria and Switzerland in UEFA 2012 European Football Championship qualifying matches, but did not feature in either game.
Carrick has been at United since July 2006, when he moved from Tottenham Hotspur for an initial fee of £14m. He has gone on to make 190 appearances in total for the club and has scored 17 goals. He has picked up three league winners’ medals and has also won the Football League Cup, Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup.
