Michael Carrick says he does not want to become an emergency defender for Manchester United
Manchester United midfielder http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Michael-Carrick-c25282 has expressed dissatisfaction over being an emergency defender for the Red Devils and claimed that it would take an extraordinary effort from him to perform defensive duties.
He said, “It did get a mention in the changing room I said to Mike Phelan 'I don't fancy that again'. It is never nice to get the injuries of course. It is disappointing when you pick up a number in a similar position. But I don't think we are that desperate
yet and hopefully I won't be called upon.”
Michael Carrick is expected to play as a centre-back in United’s next Premier League match against Bolton Wanderers on Saturday. The Red Devils are fighting with an extensive injury list with eight of their first team players still on the sidelines due to
injuries.
United, who are aiming for a treble in the ongoing 2010-11 season, are well short of players in the defence. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rio-Ferdinand-c31173 who is suffering from a calf injury, has not featured since late January 2011 and has already been ruled out of the
weekend match.
Moreover, Manchester United captain http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Nemanja-Vidic-c27550 did not play in their victory over Marseille and has slim chances of featuring against Bolton Wanderers.
The Red Devils did qualify for the quarterfinal of the UEFA Champions League by defeating Marseille but that qualification came at the cost of injuries to two defenders, John O’Shea and Rafael Pereira da Silva. Both limped off the pitch due to hamstring
injuries.
Recent injuries mean that eleven of Manchester United’s players could be unavailable for the fixture against Bolton Wanderers. However, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jonny-Evans-c19085, who has not played in the last eight games for Manchester United, is expected to return this weekend.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fabio-c13152 Pereira da Silva, who is a leftback at Old Trafford, is likely to
play as a right-back on the weekend.
With limited options available in the defence, Sir Alex Ferguson could be prompted to play Michael Carrick or http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Defence-c38904.
