Michael Chang advises players to use drop-shot more often – Tennis News
Former world number two, Michael Chang, was known for his agility across the courts and his ability to surprise his opponents with something extraordinary every time. He stayed amongst the elite group of Top-10 players for the
most part of his season especially the years 1992-1997 yielded the best returns for him.
In 1989, he became the youngest player ever in the history of Association of Tennis Professionals to clinch a Roland Garros French Open title. He was just 17-year-old at that time and had such confidence over his game that he bamboozled
the number one player in the world, Ivan Lendl, during the fourth round of that tournament with an under-arm serve.
Recently, the American superstar was contacted by the reporters of The Tennis Space and they interviewed him about the different types of techniques that could be implemented during a contest to unsettle the rival standing at the
other side of the court.
Chang gladly commented about attacking the second serve. He stated, “This was something I developed during my career, and I think it’s a tactic which guys now don’t do enough of. If you suddenly attack a second serve, it totally
throws your opponent’s rhythm off as then the ball is right at them.”
He also stated the use of drop-shot was crucial for the success at advanced stages of the tournament. He added, “You get guys pounding away ten feet behind the baseline, pounding, pounding, and they can end it all by suddenly playing
a drop-shot. If you can shake a guy up mentally, if he ends up thinking that he doesn’t know what’s coming next, and he’s no longer sure he can win, that’s worth even more to you than one or two winners.”
It has been almost nine years that the American athlete has left the world of tennis but his accomplishments are still counted amongst the elite. The 40-year-old American is still fit to play, a less gruelling battle against any
athlete of his age. He contests in the Champions Tournaments occasionally to keep in touch with the fellows as well and stay in shape.
