Australian skipper, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SR-Watson-c2558 back in the national Test squad, as the team prepares to tackle the Windies on their travel next month.
“I can't wait to have him back,” Clarke said after he and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Allan-Robert-Border-c43726 Medal ceremony in Melbourne. “It's great to see him back playing one-day cricket. I have absolutely no doubt that he'll walk straight back into our Test team.
He's been a great player for a long time but his performances over the last three years have been very consistent.”
Watson, who was recently awarded the title for Australia's best ODI and Twenty20 international player for the past year, was out of the national squad for a period of roughly three months, as he battled a slew of injuries, including a hamstring complaint,
and a calf muscle injury.
Consequently, he missed two home Test series – the Trans-Tasman Trophy (during which the Aussies hosted New Zealand) which ended in a tie, and the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy, in which http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 whitewashed India, 4-0.
After making a comeback to the squad in the tri-series match against India on February 26 at Sydney, during which he filled in for the injured Clarke as captain and lead the team to an 87-run win, claiming 2 wickets for 9 runs in 5 overs to boot, the all-rounder
has expressed uncertainty about the place he occupies in the current national Test squad.
“I'm not exactly sure to be honest,” Watson said. “I want to be a part of it because it's been very exciting to watch from afar and I really want to play a big role in that, whatever role that is.”
However, with Clarke having expressed his support for the 30-year-old, Watson’s place in the Test squad appears secure. While he played as an opener in his comeback game, it is likely that selectors will move him down to 3rd in the Test batting
line-up, in place of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andrew-Graham-Downton-c44379 Cowan as the opening batsmen.
