Michael Clarke expresses confidence in the presence of Ricky Ponting in the team
Australia’s newly appointed captain, Michael Clarke has expressed his confidence in having no problems while retaining former skipper Ricky Ponting in the national team.
Clarke who was in front of the press yesterday to answer questions regarding his appointment was quizzed about the status of Ponting in the team as he has been retained in squad which will tour http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747 in April.
Clarke while responding to a question said, “I certainly don’t think Ricky is any elephant in any room. I know he will allow me to do my job to the best of my ability. If he can continue to play as well as he has done for such a long time, I’m certain it
can work.”
Ponting, who relinquished his captaincy two days back after getting knocked out of the ICC World Cup 2011 in the quarter-final by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750, insisted that he still had cricket left in him and would want to continue playing for Australia as a batsman in the team.
Cricket Australia (CA) retained him in the squad that is due to make its first tour after the World Cup.
However, Polls in Australia suggest that most Aussies are not in favour of giving the realms of the Australian cricket team to Clarke. Many former Australian cricketers have also expressed reservations towards his appointment because of his prevailing bad
patch with the bat, for over a year now. Experts believe that a third choice should have been made by CA in appointing a new skipper.
However, since Clarke was Ponting’s number two, it was logical to promote him as captain after the demise of his mentor. Shane http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Watson-c96326 has been appointed as the vice-captain in all the three formats of the game while Clarke will not be captaining the Twenty20
side, as he retired from the shortest version of the game to concentrate on Test and one-day cricket. Cameron White has been retained as the skipper of the Twenty20 squad.
Hitting back at his critics, the 29-year old Clarke said, “I don’t sit here and believe I can get the whole of this country to like me, people are always going to have their own views, but for me it’s about respect, leading the team in the right way, playing
cricket in the right manner.”
Clarke who will be turning 30 this week, rebuffed the concerns by some that he wasn’t mature enough to lead the national team. He reiterated that it would be the way that he conducts his team as a captain that will in time earn him respect even by those
who doubt his appointment at the moment.
