Days before the start of the home season, Australia’s Test and One Day International (ODI) captain, Michael Clarke, has expressed that he has a great appetite for scoring runs but winning matches for the team remains his top priority.
Having done exceptionally well at the junior level and also in Sheffield Shield cricket, the 31-year-old cricketer made his international debut in 2003 and has been a permanent member of the Australian side since then.
The middle-order batsman retired from T20 Internationals in 2010, in order to concentrate more on Tests and the 50-over format.
Since the start of 2011, Clarke has been in exceptional batting form, scoring 1400 runs in just 15 Tests at a staggering batting average of 56 runs per innings, with the help of five centuries.
However, the Aussie skipper’s appetite for runs is far from over and wants to score many more before he calls it a day from international sport, but team comes first for the stylish middle-order batsman, who feels immense satisfaction in winning matches for the Baggy Greens.
“I'll never be happy, however many runs I've made I want to make more. I'm greedy when it comes to batting. I want to keep making runs and help this team win. If we're not winning, you won't see me happy,” expressed the Australian skipper.
In the 83 Tests, 221 One Day Internationals and 34 T20s http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746, the right-hander has scored more than 13 and a half thousand runs at the ultimate stage of the game, which includes 26 hundreds and 77 half-centuries.
Like all batsmen, Clarke seeks individual records but he is not selfish and understands that his primary job is to make Australia win.
“My value on winning has always been the same, do whatever the team needs you to do to win. If you need to try to hit your first ball for six, because that's what the team needs, then you do that,” Clarke added while talking about his personal achievements. "I guess it re-emphasised that, it showed me that I'd rather get a duck and win.”
