Michael Cuddyer talks about ninth inning fiasco as Minnesota Twins lose 4-5 to Seattle Mariners
Minnesota Twins regretted not going up in the ninth against the Seattle Mariners as they lost 4-5 on Tuesday, September 20 at Target Field in Minneapolis. The team had bases loaded against Mariners’ closer Brandon League but they were unable to draw a run
from the opportunity as three hitters were called out in quick succession.
Right-fielder, Michael Cuddyer, was the first Twins’ star to see the call go against him as he struck-out. The Twins had earlier gotten on the diamond through Rene Tosoni, Ben Revere and Trevor Plouffe. League was under pressure after he got the last runner
on. His throwing error spelled an opportunity for Cuddyer but things did not go the way he wanted.
"It's tough. I'll take that one tonight because I didn't come through," Cuddyer said.
Ichiro Suzuki played a risky gamble in the ninth when he allowed a fly ball from Cuddyer to fall in the foul area. On strike two, Cuddyer went on to strike immediately after the incident. Suzuki wanted the Twins to remain on the bases as Tosoni was in a
scoring position, on the third.
"Yeah, he definitely let it drop. No question," Cuddyer said. "It's gutsy. It hit the wall or short-hopped the wall, I can't remember exactly, but he made a better play on the one in the first inning. But it's his call, and he obviously made the right one."
The Twins are now on 94 losses and Cuddyer had a lot to say about the chance that was forgone on Tuesday.
"You definitely don't want 100 losses," Cuddyer said.
The player went on to say that the team has to go out to play hard to win. He regretted the chance that was dropped by the club. As the regular season is coming to a close, most teams will be looking to limit their errors as the pressure is mounting on the
players. He told the press that the club was in the position on Tuesday to break their losing streak but they were unable to seal the deal.
