Micahel Dawson replaces Rio Ferdinand in England World Cup squad
It’s been a world wind 24 hours for Tottenham Hotspur defender Michael Dawson, who has now arrived safely in South Africa to replace injured Rio Ferdinand in England’s final World Cup squad.
The 26 year old arrived in South Africa 7am (UK time) this morning and was more than happy to abandon his holiday plans to be part of Fabio Capello’s final 23 man squad.
He was originally axed from the provisional squad of 30 for the tournament on Tuesday, but after Ferdinand was forced out with a knee ligament injury suffered in training from Emile Heskey on Friday, Dawson was given the call-up from the Football Association.
Sky sports news correspondent Ian Dovaston, who was on the same flight as Dawson, said the player looked relaxed as he touched down in Johannesburg.
"He looked very, very happy, very well and very fit," Dovaston said.
"He was clearly delighted about getting the call into the squad.
"Obviously he is not delighted about the injury to Rio Ferdinand but it gives him his chance."
He added: "It is an incredible turnaround for a young man who you have to say deserves it on the basis of his performances during the season."
The World Cup will provide Dawson with his first senior cap, he has a week from now to adapt to the climate and prepare for the USA game in Rustenberg on June 12th.
Steven Gerrard was Capello's first England captain but the coach reckons he was too intimidated by the demands of leading his country.
Now, though, after injury ruled Ferdinand out of the World Cup, Gerrard will have to shoulder the responsibility under even greater pressure.
