Michael Dennis triumphs over young guns at Mandurah Easter Amateur Championship
Michael Dennis has successfully repeated history at the Mandurah Easter Amateur Open when he won the final round of the tournament on April 26th, with a monstrous aggregate of ten-under, five shots ahead of runner up Ryan Peake. Dennis, also the
winner of 2005 episode of the Mandurah Easter at the Mandurah Golf and Country Club in Perth, managed to climb up the leaderboard in a strong field including Matt Stieger, Bret Drewitt, and Jordan Zunic.
Dennis surfaced to the top slot in the third round of the tournament on Saturday with his impressive rounds of 70-69. In a field of comparatively young and budding players, Dennis proved the importance of experience even at the amateur level. With his vast
knowledge of the Mandurah layout, he closed with 71-68 to emerge as the winner.
Jordan Zunic of the Bonnie Doon’s and Jack Newton Foundation was one of the players who performed majestically on the final day when he scored eight-under, 64. The opening two days of the tournament saw a below par performance by the field as only six players
were able to make it par or better. Todd Sinnot of Queensland Victoria also showed signs of improvement in his putting and chipping with his score of seven-under, 65.
Dennis is one of the most experienced amateur golfers on the Australian Amateur Tour and is also the winner of the 2010 Perth City Championship. He finished as a runner up in the Western Australian Stroke Play Championship and with his win at Mandurah, which
is also a National Selection event, Dennis has sent a strong signal to the next generation of younger amateur golfers.
The timing of the event had directly collided with the New Zealand Amateur Championship at Christchurch and some of the top ranking kiwi players like Ben Campbell and Ryan Fox preferred to play in their national events. Only two players out of the top 100
players, Matt Stieger and Bret Drewitt, participated in the event, which itself is ranked 94 in the world events ranking. Stieger and Zunic finished a joint third with four-under while Drewitt finished tied for eighth with his score of one-under.
