The former Tasmanian batsman, Michael Dighton, was appointed as the new coach of Canada cricket team on Tuesday, October 4, 2011.
The vice president of Cricket Canada, Vimal Hardat, was pleased to have Dighton as the Canadian coach and hoped the Australian would help the side qualify for the 2015 World Cup.
"We are thrilled to have someone of Michael's background on board to direct our drive to the 2015 Cricket World Cup and restore our position as one of the top Associate Cricket Nations," said Hardat while talking to the media reporters.
"Michaels drive and determination to succeed will be a welcome addition to our programmes," he added further.

Dassanayake, who had played for Canada in the 2005 ICC World Cup qualifiers in 2001, and captained the associate side in the 2006 Intercontinental Cup, was appointed as the permanent coach of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Canada-c748 in August 2007. During his tenure,
he had led the associates to the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Roy-Luke-Dias-c86985.
The 35-year-old Tasmanian remained a handy opening batsman for the his state team as well as the county sides he played for during his first class career. He played 71 first class matches compiling 4208 runs at an average of 33.93
including 8 centuries and 21 half centuries.
His major teams in the English County remained Derbyshire and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Netherlands-c753 in England’s domestic 40-over tournament, Clydesdale Bank 40, as an overseas player.
Besides being the batting coach of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Tasmania-c854 Under-23 side, he also worked as head coach of Cricket Australia's National Emerging Talent Rookie Squad. He was the assistant coach of Netherlands in the 2011 World Cup.
Dighton told the media reporters that he will emphasize on basics and encourage attacking cricket among the Canadian cricketers.
"I will place much emphasis on physical preparation [fitness] and fielding, the two areas that we can control and always improve on," he said. "I will encourage an attacking and dynamic brand of cricket, combined with smart decision
making."
