Michael Hoey quits Horizon Sports Management, says company is giving undue importance to Rory McIlory
While most of the rampaging Northern Irish players are flocking at the Horizon Sports Management camp, European Tour’s latest winner Michael Hoey has decided otherwise for weird reasons.
The Trophee Hassan II winner in Morocco has now announced to part ways with the Dublin based company, primarily because he considers the company has been giving undue importance to its star client, Rory McIlroy.
The reason, as childish as it may sound, Hoey will be quitting the firm with immediate effect and has not disclosed the new company he will be signing up with.
Hoey said, “So I have been thinking about if for some time and it’s not as though I’m dropping Conor without any notice, but with Rory now on board and playing more in the States their management has changed and altered”.
Hoey has pulled in stunning performances in the past 12 months, winning no fewer than three European Tour titles all over the world.
The 33-year-old Ballymoney native has seven professional titles on his belt and is currently in a blistering form on the European Tour.
His winning spree started back in May last year where he pulled in Madeira Islands Open, defeating Chris Grane and Jamie Elson by two strokes.
He overtook the trailblazing McIlroy in October the same year, winning the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. He has now soared to number 74th on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) after his stellar win at the revered Golf du Palais Royal
of the Royal Palace of Agadir.
Hoey added, “I was in a business relationship with Horizon but I feel I was not benefiting from any business in the arrangement as much as I could have been”.
Hoey’s decision comes as a surprise as two of the top-performing Northern Irishmen McIlroy and Graeme McDowell both have switched over to Horizon, walking away from the infamous Chubby Chandler of International Sports Management.
McIlroy made the decision just after his victory at the US Open at Congressional and his decision is said to be predominantly affected by his play-mate McDowell.
Hoey, like many other Irish players, will now be heading to the Irish Open scheduled at the Royal Portrush Golf Club. The event is returning to the scenic venue for the first time after it was organised at the same venue in 1953.
