Michael Jordan comes out in support of embattled Tiger Woods – NBA Update
Michael Jordan has thrown his weight behind the golf mega star Tiger Woods and has backed the former world number one to come through his current rough patch. Jordan is a golf fanatic and has played alongside Woods at several occasions.
Jordan himself went through some turmoil in his life when his father died in 1993, but the player persevered to come through those pains both on and off the court. Jordan dominated the sport of basketball like no other player and elevated the standing of the game, driving a whole generation towards it through his sheer power of will.
Even after taking a two year break from the game to go and play baseball, something his father wanted him to do when Jordan was growing up, Michael did not lose the X-factor that made him so special. He returned from the break and led the Chicago Bulls to another 3 NBA World Championship.
If anyone can give Woods some advice, who is a living legend of golf, it is Michael Jordan, and “his airness” spoke of Tiger’s troubles and how playing can help him overcome them,
“The biggest thing is that I’ve always – and I’m pretty sure Tiger has, too – used sport as a therapeutic tool,” he said. “Once you’re inside the lines, you can focus on what your jobs are and what you’re doing on the court, or for him the course. The problem for him was that he wasn’t physically capable of getting inside those lines and doing those things. I think he’s been somewhat fragile mentally and physically.”
Woods has faced a storm in his personal and professional life since the disclosures by a number of women, who claimed Tiger had been unfaithful to her wife. The media scrutiny has been intense since then and the eruption of negative coverage saw Tiger lose face around the world.
On the golf field, Woods has not been able to escape the public glare and injuries have played their part in keeping the player uncomfortable. He has therefore not been able to perform as well as he can and went through what was one of the worst years in his life.
The player is now looking to put all that behind him and Michael Jordan believes that it will be an uphill struggle for the multiple times golf champion, as Tiger had only known the affection of fans before the scandal surfaced,
“He needs to get healthy, mentally and physically, before he can really attack that. And it is such a mental game, so he has to be right again in that sense and I believe he will get there again.”
Tiger may take his time to find his roar and rise to the top again, but he sure is a lucky guy to have somebody like Jordan rooting for him to come through.
