Michael Katsidis says he’s beat demons bigger than Juan Manuel Marquez
Michael Katsidis (27-2, 22 KOs) believes he’s faced bigger “demons” than upcoming weekend opponent Juan Manuel Marquez (51-5, 37 KOs).
In a Friday interview with the popular boxing website Fanhouse, Katsidis revealed his state of mind a day before the biggest fight of his life, saying he felt prepared and ready to beat the veteran-but-still-sharp Marquez.
Katsidis and Marquez will be squaring off at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. They will headline a card that will also feature WBC welterweight king Andre Berto and contender Freddy Hernandez.
“I personally believe, and my trainer believes, that the demons that I've faced are a lot bigger than Juan Manuel Marquez. So we've had a very tough camp and we've done the work. So I'm just looking forward to Saturday night,” Katsidis confirmed.
By “demons,” Katsidis is presumably referring to the recent death of his brother. The tragic news came mid-training camp for Katsidis and immediately threw the fight in limbo.
Katsidis, however, released a statement saying that while he was mourning the loss, he would still fight on the set date and dedicate the performance to his brother.
“If you're a fighter, you know that, like any fighter, you go through a lot of things, and you deal with a lot of things. This training camp has been the hardest that I've had yet. I've had to deal with a lot, and I'm here. If I wasn't here, and if I wasn't
here to win, I wouldn't be here. So, I'm very happy that we've done the work and here we are,” Katsidis concluded.
Though Katsidis is determined to win Marquez’s titles, he will have his work cut out for him. Marquez is considered one of the best fighters in the world. He is coming off a winning decision over a game Juan Diaz, ten years his junior.
