Michael Lahnsteiner convincingly clears first round of US Open GPG 2013 – Badminton news
Austria’s spirited badminton player, Michael Lahnsteiner, impressed the crowd with his tremendous skills in Men’s Singles first round when he outplayed England’s Michael Spencer Smith at the Yonex OCBC US Open GPG 2013 in USA, on Monday, July 8.
The aggressive Lahnsteiner, who has been looking for a breakthrough for the last couple of years, played with impressive speed and aggression in this first round clash. He took just 23 minutes to overpower his English rival.
Lahnsteiner had to work hard for winning the starting game of this contest. However, it was a smooth sailing in the following game and he finished up this starting round match in a tremendous fashion with a 21-15 and 21-4 total on the score board.
Meanwhile, Smith put up strong show especially in the starting half of first game but he lost his focus because of the fast and aggressive play of his opponent. He could not tackle the pace of rallies and lost the match in a lopsided manner.
The starting points were quite interesting when both contestants displayed their aggressive skills and remained toe-to-toe. However, Lahnsteiner started to increase his speed and injected more power into his shots.
The Austrian took over the control from his English opponent by playing attacking and positive game and set up a reasonable gap on the board until the one-minute break.
After the interval, Lahnsteiner did not show any sign of slowing down and he maintained a wonderful speed all the way. He remained ahead in the concluding half and took the set with a comfortable score of 21-15.
The second game was a nightmare for Smith who failed to respond positively to the perfect play of his opponent. He could not take the bird timely and seemed that he gave up fighting.
On the contrary, Lahnsteiner was quite comfortable in his play and he remained miles ahead until the end of opening half of second game.
After the mid-game break, the in-form Lahnsteiner did not slow down his speed at any stage and he won the second set with an incredible 21-4 score on the board.
