Michael Lammer outplays Marco Chiudinelli to reach the main rounds – Swiss Indoors 2011
Earning a wild card in the qualifying draw, the local veteran Michael Lammer outplayed his fellow compatriot, Marco Chiudinelli, in the qualifying competition to earn a spot in the main rounds of the Davidoff Swiss Indoors on Sunday
afternoon.
The all-Swiss affair was played on the indoor hard courts of the St. Jakobshalle in Basel, Switzerland, with the 29-year-old booking a place in the main draw of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 500 event.
Lammer battled hard for two hours and twenty six minutes of play to wrap up the exciting three-setter at 3-6, 7-6(2), 6-0, to drive his opponent out of the competition.
The contest witnessed a couple of huge momentum swings, with the two players toiling extremely hard to come on top. Chiudinelli was off to a brilliant start in the competition and outplayed the sixth seed Uzbek opponent, Denis
Istomin, in the opening round. He took off the Sunday’s matchup with the similar aggressive manner but lost his way in the middle parts of the game to let the other Swiss come on top.
After a sloppy start in the opener, Lammer gradually gathered up pace in the second set to gain the required momentum. The Swiss fought hard to convert some crucial opportunities in the game and clinched the second set in a tie
breaker round to bring the competition back on even terms. Once getting into his winning groove, he never looked back in the final set and absolutely blew away his Swiss competitor to conclude victory.
Lammer stunned the top seed Australian, Bernard Tomic, in the opening round and carried on his winning impetus in the final round qualifier as well. He was defeated by Chiudinelli at the same venue in the round of 16 of the 2009
edition but turned the tables on him this time round to earn a place in the main rounds.
The Swiss wildcard converted five of his 11 break opportunities to come out as the winner, while Chiudinelli remained at a disadvantage with three breaks of serve to his name. Lammer appeared absolutely unplayable in the final
set of the match, breaking his opponent’s serve in every single game to rocket away to victory in style. He nailed three straight break points to drive Chiudinelli out of the competition in an assertive manner.
Lammer will take off his main round voyage at the Davidoff Swiss Indoors against the world number 32, Mikhail Youzhny of Russia, on Tuesday afternoon.
