Michael Maguire’s departure from Wigan Warriors is sweetened by 28-18 win
Michael Maguire, the coach of the Wigan Warriors receives his perfect exit from the Warriors as his franchise bags their first Challenge Cup since 1995.
This long awaited dream was realised on Saturday night’s clash, at the Headingley Stadium in Wembley as the league topper battle the underdogs, Leeds Rhinos to unveil the title-holder this year.
Wigans’ 28-18 victory was the best gift which a club could offer to its departing coach. Maguire after serving two years at the Wigans experienced an emotional moment at their Saturday night’s win.
While paying tribute to some of his injured players, Maguire added, “I never dreamed of it but to win here is unbelievable. Josh Charnley broke his finger and had it down to the bone, while Lee Mossop popped his shoulder out and carried on. We hung in there,
withstood a lot of pressure. They're a special bunch, one that will go down in Wigan history. We'll enjoy tonight and then go back to work next week. I'm really pleased to be able to work with such quality people at an organisation like Wigan.”
It was acknowledged by the coach that his players showed great strength and resistance to kind of pressure which was charged down on them. Despite some major injures his players remained steadfast in their efforts to have the Carnegie title under their belt.
The highlight of the match was the try made by Joel Tomkins is branded as the “try-of-the-match” which was nonetheless is accredited for his across the field length.
While sharing his Wembley experience, Wigan’s coach also added that the Saturday nights’ win is a collective team effort and a single person for this entire win will not do any justice to the rest of the squad.
It was further added by Wigan’s skipper, Sean O’Loughlin that winning the Challenge Cup has a unique feeling attached to it that is indeed a very proud feeling for all.
According to Jeff Lima who has virtually inspired this victory for Wigans also shared that the support of fans and family has definitely played a huge role in making it possible.
