Michael Maier retains 2011 Finn World Masters title
Czech Republic’s Michael Maier grabbed a clean sweep victory on Punta Ala waters in Italy and retained his title of Finn World Masters on Friday, June 17. The defending champion at the event, Maier
made it look easy even under extreme weather conditions and won the title for the third time in his career, with 7 points on the final day.
Heavy winds on the final day added a new element in the competition as the sailors faced strong gusts during the race. What made the race more challenging was the constant shift in direction of the
breeze, blowing 16 to 17 knots from south.
Maier grabbed the first place overall with seven points, after taking first positions in all races. Great Britain’s Allen Burrell followed him for second place, with 13 points.
While speaking to the reporters, Maier said after the victory, “Today was good, though it looked like it could be a little bit tricky, but finally the wind was good and I think that's the most wind
we had all week. I am sailing this week for fun, if I win I win, but if I don't then it's OK.”
He added, “I am very happy with the result, but I have had a few lucky races this week, especially yesterday in the light winds - you never know what will happen. But today everyone at the top was
in blue fleet and it's supposed to be random, so maybe there was something wrong in the computer!”
The Finn World Masters will return to UK next year for the first time in 12 years and will be organised by Pwllheli Sailing Club in Wales.
