Michael Maker and owners prepare Parent’s House for the Jewel
Trainer Michael Maker will be ready for the Claiming Crown at Gulfstream Park this time around, and on the earliest opening of Gulfstream Park’s fall meet ever, there will be a 10 race program on 1 December, 2012.
Michael Maker and owners Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey are the biggest advocates of the Claiming Crown, and they will have seven races on the opening day to run their horses in, including the main event of the day, the $200,000 Jewel.
Michael Maker will send in 13 horses in the 2012 edition of the Claiming Crown, and for the main event he has Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey’s Parent’s Honor to run in the Jewel.
“We claim quite a few horses so it’s a good event to have,” said Maker. “Obviously having the event at Gulfstream makes it easier for me since our horses are stabled there. But it’s also going to make it tougher for us to win since the fields are going to be much more competitive this year.”
The 4-year-old bay gelding by Elusive Quality was claimed by Michael Maker for the Ramseys for $35,000, when he won this summer at Saratoga. Since then, the bay gelding has run in two races under the banner of the Ramseys.
He made his debut race for his new owners in the Temperence Hill Stakes on 9 August, 2012, at Louisiana Downs and finished fifth on the day, and made his second start for his new connections in the Mountaineer Mile Stakes, but couldn’t improve from his finish last time around, and settled for ninth at Mountaineer race track on 3 November, 2012.
“Parent’s Honor is a horse I haven’t quite figured out yet,” said Maker. “Even though he was sprinting, I figured he wanted to go two turns, so his last effort, going a mile at Mountaineer, was a disappointment. So far he’s trained a lot better than he’s run for us. If he runs like he’s trained, I’d be awfully confident in his chances on Saturday.”
In the Jewel, Parent’s House will be co-highweight at 124 pounds along with Private Take under the allowance conditions of the race.
