Michael Mancienne Returns To Wolves On Loan For Another Season
Michael Mancienne, the Chelsea defender returns to Wolverhampton Wanderers for yet another loan spell, this will be his third season at the club.
The U-21 England international made some 33 appearances for the Wolves last season in the Premier League, mostly starting as a defensive midfielder. He also featured in 10 matches for the club in the 2008-2009 season in the Championship, after which he received an England call up.
The 22 year old defender has three years left on his current contract with the Blues, but is set to spend another season with the Wolves. The Molineux club confirmed this news.
Wolves boss Mick MacCarthy revealed that he was delighted with Mancienne’s decision to stay and is expected to start with the youngster in the Premier League fixture against Newcastle United. He praised the youngster, saying that he would play an important part in Wolves’ campaign.
“I'm delighted that Mance has re-signed for another year. We know the quality he's got and it's great to have him back. He made 30-odd appearances for us in the Barclays Premier League last season and did very well. He's also very versatile and can operate in different positions, which is a big help to any manager,” he told reporters.
Mancienne was linked with moves to both West Ham and Newcastle United, but the young defender opted to stay with the Wolves, saying that after Chelsea he preferred McCarthy’s side. He said that he was not sure if he would get any starts with the Blues, so for now he wanted to stay with the Wolves.
He told reporters, “It didn't look like anything was going to happen with Chelsea and I want to play. Wolves have been very good to me in the past and I'm delighted to be back. In a way it feels like I'm coming back home and I'm really looking forward to the season.”
“There were other alternatives, but the gaffer here has been really good to me and had faith in me and helped me improve my game. That played a big part in my decision.” Mancienne admitted that Mick McCarthy’s influence played a major part in his decision to rejoin the Wolves for a third consecutive season.
There have been reports according to which it was suggested that if the Blues part ways with the young defender again, it would be permanent. The figure the player would fetch at this stage would be £4-5million. However the Blues chief executive said a loan was in the best interest of both clubs at this stage.
Jez Moxey, the chief executive said in an official statement, “We did speak to Chelsea about a permanent deal but it was decided the best course of action was another season-long loan. Michael was happy to do that, and although he had other alternatives, decided to come back to Wolves.”
