Michael Martinez’ homer helps Philadelphia Phillies defeat New York Mets 8-5 - MLB Recap
Philadelphia Phillies’ centre-fielder, Michael Martinez was outstanding with the bat as he hit his first homer of the season and had four RBIs in the Phillies’ 8-5 victory over the New York Mets at Citi Field, New York on July 17.
The Phillies got off the mark during the very first inning and took a 1-0 lead when Chase Utley posted a single run on the drive of Ryan Howard towards right-field. The second to the fourth inning were score-less for both sides as the batters looked powerless
in front of the tricky pitches. Lucas Duda doubled to left-field but Ronny Paulino was grounded out to short-stop and Mike Pelfrey grounded out to pitcher at the bottom of the second inning.
During the fourth inning, Ibanez was struck-out swinging and Domonic Brown struck-out looking. Similarly, the Mets’ short-stop Ruben Tejada flied out to centre-field without posting any run at the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Phillies raised their lead 4-0 after blasting three quick runs in the fifth inning. Martinez struck a three-run homer (371 feet) towards right-field while Jimmy Rollins and Kyle Kendrick both scored two collective runs for the Phillies. The pitchers
did not give any run during the sixth inning by tossing the accurate throws.
Kendrick, who pitched for the Phillies, was amazing with the ball as he threw for seven innings with an ERA of 3.34 and allowed only one run on six hits. He was unable to strike-out any batter and gave up three walks on his 109 pitches.
At the top of the seventh inning, Martinez hit a sacrifice fly to left-field and Brian Schneider scored a single run for the Phillies. On the other side, Paulino posted the first run for the Mets when Scott Hairston singled towards left-field at the bottom
of the seventh inning. The score-board advanced to 5-1 after the seventh inning.
In the eighth inning, both the teams contributed six individual runs to move the score-board 8-4. Howard, Brown and Schneider each singled and completed three runs for the Phillies at the top of the eighth while Willie Harris, Daniel Murphy and Paulino added
three runs for the Mets to reduce their lead at the bottom of the eighth inning.
Murphy posted the last run for the Mets during the ninth inning to cut their deficit 8-5. But, the Phillies ended the three-game series 2-1 after winning this game.
