Michael Martinez’s double RBIs help Philadelphia Phillies defeat Chicago Cubs 4-2 - MLB Recap
Philadelphia Phillies’ third baseman, Michael Martinez had a remarkable day with the bat as he went 2-for-4 and hit two RBIs with an average of .228 in the Phillies’ 4-2 victory against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field, Chicago on July 19.
The Cubs added their initial two runs in the very first inning to get a 2-0 lead. Starlin Castro struck a two-run homer (377 feet) towards left-field and Reed Johnson posted a single run. The pitchers preserved their control from second to seventh inning
of the game by tossing the throws in the right zone.
Ryan Howard was struck-out swinging and Shane Victorino flied out to centre-field at the top of the second inning. Similarly, the Cubs’ batters also got out as Matt Garza struck-out bunting foul and Castro struck-out swinging at the bottom of the second
inning.
The Phillies’ batters missed the scoring runs at the top of the sixth inning when Martinez walked but Jimmy Rollins popped out to second base and Chase Utley struck-out swinging. At the bottom of the seventh inning, the Cubs’ batters seemed powerless as
Blake DeWitt flied out to centre-field and Garza struck-out looking.
In the eighth inning, the Phillies’ batters tied the game 2-2 by posting two quick runs. Rollins and Martinez both contributed two collective runs when Utley doubled off deep centre-field. The Cubs’ out-fielder, Marlon Byrd popped out to second base and
Alfonso Soriano struck-out swinging at the bottom of the eighth inning.
The Phillies’ manager, Charlie Manuel commented on Martinez and said, “We stayed after them, we stayed with them. Martinez hit it in a great place, an ideal place. He was fortunate. I was hoping it was (fair). When it hit, I knew it was fair because I saw
it, but when he hit it, I was pulling for it.”
The Phillies rallied again in the ninth inning and scored two runs to take their lead 4-2. Martinez drove a double-run shot towards right-field while Ben Francisco and Rollins added two runs jointly. Later on, Martinez was thrown out to third base. On the
other hand, Kosuke Fukudome struck-out swinging and Johnson also struck-out swinging at the bottom of the ninth inning.
With this impressive win, the Phillies tied the three-game series 1-1 at Wrigley Field.
