Michael McClune, Andrei Daescu make it to the main draw – Tulsa Challenger 2011
Qualifying top seed Michael McClune from United States secured a thumping 6-4, 6-2 victory over compatriot Dane Webb on Monday to book his place in the second round of 2011 Tulsa Challenger in Oklahoma, United States.
McClune looked in stunning form in the final round match at the Association of Tennis Professionals Challenger event as he required only sixty four minutes dispatching his opponent. The two players contested hard in both sets but
McClune’s powerful and on-target serves allowed him to dictate the match. The top seed dashed his amazing backhand and forehand winners all over the court to establish complete control over the contest.
Webb, on the other hand, lacked the firepower in several areas of the game. He had his chances but he was unable to make them count and eventually wore out.
Looking for a place in the final draw here at Oklahoma, McClune made a solid start to the match. Breaking the serve early in the opening set, he dented his opponent’s confidence levels. Holding on to his series with no trouble
what so ever, he earned a very handsome 4-2 lead in the set. Webb, who was also up for the challenge, broke straight back to even the game score at 4-4.
Converting his second break opportunity of the set, he took 5-4 lead, serving for the set. Firing his blistering serve aces at all possible angles, he took the set score lead 1-0 within first half an hour of the match.
The second set followed a pretty similar pattern with McClune playing natural game with freedom. Every time he was tested, he answered with a big shot. Webb was unable to find his game play and he suffered double serve break to
let his opponent have a match winning 5-2 lead in the set. Converting the very first match point with a lovely passing shot, McClune completed his straight sets victory to qualify for the main draw,
Ranked 558th in the world, McClune aimed to give similar performances in the upcoming matches as well. However consistency is going to be the key if he wants to survive till the final stages.
In another match, qualifying second seed Andrei Daescu of Romania eased past Guillermo Alcorta Olarro of Spain 6-2, 7-5 to reach the final round of TULSA Open.
Daescu made most of the opportunities by converting four out of six break points in the match. His serve was also on-target most of the times as he hit achieved a 62 percent on his first serve.
