Michael Meyer conquers Men’s 200m IM prelims – African Senior Championships
Michael Meyer of RSA-ZZ conquered the preliminary rounds of the Men’s 200m Individual Medley (IM) on last day of the 11th African Senior Swimming Championships 2012 in Nairobi, Kenya on Sunday, September 16.
The 20-year-old Meyer lived up to the expectations of his opponents in the four-lap IM discipline and qualified into the final round as strongest swimmer for gold medal.
Meyer experienced strong resistance from his following swimmer but managed to secure top qualifying position of the event by touching the wall with a timing of 2 minutes and 14.40 seconds.
Meyer was followed by Mehdi Hamama of ALGE-ZZ, who stayed 0.59 seconds apart and transpired on the finishing blockade as second position holder by submitting an effort of 2 minutes and 14.99 seconds.
Hamama was followed by Pedro Pinotes of ANG-ZZ, who was 2.67 seconds apart and occupied third best qualification spot of the race by reporting a time of 2 minutes and 17.66 seconds.
Fourth best spot of the event was obtained by Taki Mrabet of TUNIS-ZZ, who suffered a loss of 1.60 seconds from his foregoing finisher and clocked an effort of 2 minutes and 19.26 seconds.
The 23-year-old Mrabet was chased by El Sayed Gadalla of EGY-ZZ, who remained only 0.04 seconds apart and surfaced on the finishing end as fifth best finisher by touching the wall with a timing of 2 minutes and 19.30 seconds.
Sixth finest spot of the race was secured by Ayrton S Sweeney of RSA-ZZ, who was 0.27 seconds behind and surfaced on the wall with a timing of 2 minutes and 19.57 seconds.
Sweeney remained 1.13 seconds ahead of Ahmed Hamdy Salem of EGY-ZZ, who proved his eligibility for seventh best qualification spot of the event by reporting a time of 2 minutes and 20.70 seconds.
Eighth best qualifying position of the event was obtained by JT Engelbrecht of NAMB-ZZ, who remained significantly slower from his former finisher and touched the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 36.39 seconds.
Furthermore, Meyer aroused expectations of his supporters by claiming that he would try his best to achieve the same in playoff.
