Michael Morse powers Washington Nationals to 6-4 win over Florida Marlins – MLB Update
The Washington Nationals scored three runs in the ninth inning to defeat Florida Marlins 6-4 on Monday, September 26 at Sun Life Stadium in Miami, Florida.
Needing one run to draw level in the last inning, Michael Morse hammered Edward Mujica towards left-field for a three-run homer to virtually seal the game for Washington. Henry Rodriguez followed with a perfect ninth, allowing just one hit to bring the Nationals
just one win away from finishing the season with a .500 winning percentage.
Morse was central to the win which helped Nationals clinch the third place in NL East, becoming the first team from Washington to finish this high since 1945. Morse’s hit brought up his 30th home-run of the season and pushed his batting average
to .303 for the season which, for him, is a career-best.
Expressing his excitement after the game, Morse said, "This was great. The curtain call was unreal, and to help the team win today, it was a big game."
Logan Morrison started things impressively for Florida, smashing a home-run in the second inning to give the home side a one-run lead upfront. Ian Desmond brought the game back in balance, scoring a run in the third inning for the Nationals before driving
in and then adding another run in the fourth to give the visitors a one-run lead after Omar Infante had scored a run for Florida in the third.
Out of the 25 games played in September thus far, the Nationals have managed to prevail in 16, but this result has not been sufficient to impress manager Davey Johnson. Talking to reporters after the game, Johnson said, "We haven't accomplished anything
unless we're fighting for a pennant. We're moving in that direction."
Mujica agreed with his manager and stated that the players wish there was another month left in the regular season. The team is now playing as a formidable unit and if things go as planned, results might be fruitful in the next season.
However, the Marlins thought Leo Nunez’s absence was a major factor in their inability to cling on to their lead in the last inning. Nunez had established himself as a dependable closer for the Marlins but returned to Dominican Republic to sort out immigration
issues.
