Michael Morse’s walk-off homer helps Washington Nationals beat San Diego Padres, 2-1 – MLB Update
Washington Nationals’ outfielder, Michael Morse had a remarkable day as he went 2-for-4 including one RBI and a leading homer in the Nationals’ 2-1 victory over the San Diego Padres at Nationals Park, Washington on May 27.
Morse was content with his performance. He said, “The pie that was great. That was awesome. That was something I'll never forget.”
The pitchers were outstanding in the first four innings as they did not allow a single run to any batter. The Nationals’ starter, John Lannan pitched superbly as he threw seven innings with an ERA of 4.40 and did not give away any runs on two hits. He was
able to strike-out five batters and allowed just two walks on 93 pitches.
The Nationals got off the mark in the fifth inning and took a 1-0 lead when Danny Espinosa hit a home run (400 feet) towards left-field. No score was added from sixth to eighth inning as the pitchers threw the ball in perfect line. The Nationals’ batters
failed to extend their lead as Ian Desmond was struck-out swinging and Roger Bernadina grounded out to second base in the eighth inning.
Jayson Werth was unable to put any run on the score-board and went 0-for-4. Speaking to reporters, he said, “Changes need to be made. We need to start winning ballgames. We need to start hitting the ball. We need to do what we've got to do to win games.
That's all it was.”
In the ninth inning, both teams contributed one run to move the score-card 2-1. For the Padres, Jason Bartlett hit a tie homer (361 feet) to left-field. At the bottom of ninth inning, Morse homered (407 feet) to left-centre field and gave the Nationals a
convincing lead.
The Nationals’ Manager Jim Riggleman commented on his winning excitement and said, “The losing that's taken place here the (last) couple of years -- that's got to change. We've got to change some things -- what we do -- how we play.”
Clayton Richard performed well, but that effort was not enough to steal a win for the Padres. He allowed one run on three hits in seven inning pitches. Richard had three strike-outs and permitted one walk on 111 pitches.
