Michael Nylander loaned to Florida Panthers
The Washington Capitals have loaned centre Michael Nylander to the Florida Panthers for the 2010-11 season. The veteran will join the Panthers this season in the hopes he can share some of his hockey knowledge with the young roster.
Nylander’s entire $3 million salary will be transferred to the Panthers for the season, which he will start with their American Hockey League affiliate the Rochester Americans.
Nylander was drafted 59th overall by the Hartford Whalers in the third round of the 1991 National Hockey League entry draft. The Swede would spend one year in Hartford before being traded to the Calgary Flames. He was only able to play two full
seasons with the Flames before he was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning. The following year the centre was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks where he spent three years, before being traded to the Capitals in 2002-03. Nylander only lasted one year with the Capitals
before he was moved to Boston. In 2005-06 he joined the New York Rangers and had two breakout years with the club, tallying 83 points in 2006-07. In the offseason he was signed to a lucrative four-year contract by the Capitals. He was hurt in his first season
with the club and was not able to repeat his successful numbers in his second campaign. Bloated by his contract the Capitals demoted him to the AHL and then loaned him to Jokerit Helsinki of the Finnish Elite League. The 37-year-old now joins his eighth NHL
franchise.
The Panthers brass is hoping that Nylander will be able to become a teacher on a very young team. Assistant general manager Mike Santos is excited to have Nylander on the roster, stating. “He’s coming here to help our young guys. He’s not coming here grumbling.
He wants to resurrect his career for one more shot.”
