Michael Oliveira takes on veteran Acelino Freitas in a non-title bout – Boxing News
The undefeated Michael Oliveira will most probably take on the toughest opponent of his career when he collides with Acelino Freitas, the former WBO lightweight champion, in a 10-round non-title bout which will be held on June 2, 2012.
The duo will headline the pay-per-view and the ring for the showdown will be set up at Hotel & Casino Conrad, Punta del Este, Uruguay. The event is being promoted by Carlos Oliveira of MO Promotions and will also witness Gabriela Bouvier defend his WBC Latino
flyweight title against Marta Soledad Juncos.
Michael, 22, is a surging young Brazilian who has been in a total 17 bouts and boasts an undefeated streak. Also known as ‘The Brazilian Rocky’, Oliveira has nailed 12 of his opponents by knockout and is recently coming from a win over Sergei Melis.
The orthodox pugilist recently shared his thoughts in a media appearance and commented that he respects Acelino as he is a legendary Brazilian brawler who has highlighted the country’s name by becoming a four-time world champion.
Oliveira further added that he will consider Acelino as just another pugilist and is not intimidated by the congressman’s experience and hefty resume. Michael stated, “I’m looking at him as just another opponent, despite him being a four-time world champion,
as well as one of my idols. I prepare for every fight like I’m fighting Roy Jones, Mayweather, Ali or Mike Tyson. I give 100 percent in training for every fight. Come fight night, he will be just another fighter I’ll have to go through. He may be favoured
by the public, but any of my haters will love me after I’ve beaten him.”
His opponent, Acelino has been in a total 40 bouts and boasts 38 wins. The 36-year-old is making a comeback after a long gap of almost four to five years. Also known as ‘The Popo’, Freitas last collided with Juan Diaz and lost his WBO lightweight title.
A bird’s eye view shows that Acelino has an upper hand over Michael as far as the experience is concerned but the young lad has one advantage at his disposal, Acelino’s rusty and to some extent out of form shape.
If Michael takes on Acelino hard in the early rounds he may fulfil the claim that his trainer has put forth that is collect a win via knockout. The win will definitely be a huge one for Michael as Acelino is considered as the only Brazilian brawler who has
a very decent resume despite being in 40 bouts.
The odds are equally distributed on both sides as Acelino is also claiming to have prepared well for this bout and if there is truth in his claim the experience and knockout ratio will definitely aid the veteran in nailing Michael.
