Michael Owen sidelined for another few weeks
Manchester United striker Michael Owen has suffered an injury setback in training that will keep him out for at least two weeks.
Owen, who joined Sir Alex Ferguson's team from Newcastle United last summer, has faced long spells on the sidelines during his time at the club.
After United's Carling Cup victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Tuesday, 26 October, a game that the striker was supposed to start, Owen told BBC Radio 5 live that he was not yet fit to play.
"It's not going great. I had a bit of a tight groin a while ago and I've trained for a week preparing for last night's game, but then I had a setback. Unfortunately, that ruled me out for last night, and will rule me out for a few weeks as well."
Owen has made 23 league appearances for United, most of them as a substitute. Last season, the 30-year-old started the Carling Cup final against Aston Villa and scored United's first goal in the 2–1 victory, only to suffer a hamstring injury before the end
of the first half.
"I got injured in the cup final and then subsequently this season I was in the squad for the first 10 games or so. But unfortunately, because of a training ground injury the other day, I'm going to be out for the next few weeks, which is disappointing."
Upbeat despite persistent injury problems
Ferguson started Owen against Sunderland on 2 October, but the striker had to come off at half-time.
At Newcastle, injuries also kept Owen out for long spells. He only managed to make 71 league appearances during the four seasons he spent at the club.
Despite his failure to find full fitness, the striker remained optimistic about making a return to United's first team.
"It's all part and parcel of football. Everyone gets injured. Hopefully, I can come back and be as strong as ever."
If the player's rehabilitation goes according to plan, Owen could return in time for United's Champions League fixture against Rangers FC on 24 November.
