Michael Owen suffers new hamstring injury
Manchester United have been dealt a blow with the news that Michael Owen will miss the next few weeks with a new hamstring injury.
The 30-year-old striker has struggled with injuries since his move to Old Trafford last summer and has found first-team opportunities hard to come by.
In an interview with BBC Five Live, Owen revealed he was suffering from a “different muscle injury” sustained in training, but remains adamant that he can bounce back from this latest setback and challenge for a place in the starting line-up.
"I got injured in the cup final and then subsequently this season I was in the squad for the first 10 games or so," Owen said. "But unfortunately, because of a training ground injury the other day, I'm going to be out for the next few weeks, which is disappointing.
"It's all part and parcel of football. Everyone gets injured. Hopefully, I can come back and be as strong as ever."
With the emergence of summer-signing Javier Hernandez, the superb form of Dimitar Berbatov and Wayne Rooney committing his future to the club, competition for a starting place upfront is fierce, and Owen’s latest injury setback could hardly have been more untimely.
The former Liverpool and Real Madrid star currently finds himself alongside youngster Federico Macheda in the pecking order at Old Trafford, and that situation shows little sign of changing any time soon.
However, Owen has always remained confident in his own ability and showed he’s not a spent force earlier this season with a brace against Scunthorpe in the Carling Cup third round last month, followed up by a crucial equaliser against Bolton in the Premier League.
With his dream to win his place back in both the Manchester United and England starting line-ups fading at an alarming rate, the aging striker may have to leave Old Trafford in the forthcoming months to revive his flagging career.
Providing he can overcome his persistent and increasingly concerning injury problems first.
