Michael Owen unsurprised by Liverpool’s downfall
Manchester United striker http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Michael-Owen-c25355 has stated that Liverpool’s current slump has not come as a surprise to him. He states that the club’s position in the Premier League reflects the on-and-off field problems at Anfield.
Owen said, “I am not particularly surprised. I would say their position reflects where they are right now. They are in the middle of a transitional period and off the pitch they have had a change of ownership. They are also very reliant on a couple of star
players and if they are out injured, they have tended to struggle.”
The Englishman also commented that despite not being part of Liverpool, he still has inside news on what goes on at the club but refused to disclose any of that information. He, however, stated that many things have gone wrong at Anfield over the past few
years and it will be hard for the club to recover.
He said, “Throughout all those successful years Liverpool built their foundation on passing and moving. But, from when I was there, everything has changed, barring two players. Maybe there have not been enough http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 players over the last 10 years. If
there was just one reason, then it would have been fixed. But there have been so many.”
Owen spent 8 years at Liverpool during the prime of his career, helping the Reds to 4 major trophies. The Englishman also appeared as a substitute for United in a match which saw Liverpool being knocked out of the FA Cup.
The defeat also insured a bitter return to the Reds hot seat for interim manager Kenny Dalglish. An icon to Liverpool faithful, Dalglish tasted success with the Merseyside club during the 1980s both as a player and a manager.
Dalglish has taken over from Roy Hodgson, who failed to inspire the players and was never able to gain the support of the fans. Even though Dalglish started with a defeat in the FA Cup, his real task would be to revive the Red’s Premier League season.
Liverpool lie 12th on the League table only 4 points clear of the relegation zone. Their next match in the league is against Blackpool on 12 January 2011.
