Michael Phelps' father...?

Do you believe the reports that his father left his family when Michael was a child, or do you think that story was fabricated to cover-up the fact that Mrs. Phelps "made whoopie" with a dolphin (or some other marine mammal)?

I believe that the two divorced when Phelps was nine years old. and that's that.

Fred and Debbie separated for good in 1993, and the divorce was finalized the next year, when Michael was 9. By all accounts, Fred Phelps wasn't an everyday figure in his children's lives for much of Phelps' adolescence.

They did reconcile with their father several years ago but have since drifted apart again. Fred Phelps was in Greece. He did not go to Beijing. And Phelps has not spoken to him since winning.
