Michael Phelps and Missy Franklin break records on day two of the USA Swimming Grand Prix
Day two of the USA swimming Grand Prix in Indianapolis ended on Friday with the submission of the best world times in various events along with the improvement in some of the USA national age group records. Michael Phelps and Missy Franklin managed to break
records and dominate the proceedings.
2008 Beijing Olympics star, Michael Phelps, smashed the title of the 200m butterfly at the second evening of the championship. Phelps won the event in an astonishing time of 1:55.34, as he was way ahead of the previous record setter Kazuya Kaneda, who finished
the event in 1:56.89 last month. Phelps was followed by Kaio Almeida of Brazil with a time of 1:55.85 and Wu Peng of Wolverine came third with a timing of 1:57.86.
The 15-year-old, Missy Franklin, registered one of the most wonderful swim events of the night, as she completed the 100m backstroke in a top time of 59.56. Franklin is one of the two women to complete backstroke under 1:00 this year. Aya Terakawa completed
the 100m backstroke in 59.91. Franklin lowered the U.S National age group record for the 100m backstroke. Brazil’s Fabiola Molina finished second in a time of 1:01.05 followed by Olivia Smoliga of Titan in the third place with a timing of 1:01.56.
Ryan Lochte and Matt Grevers ended the 100m backstroke in a draw with a timing of 54.08. Their timing was close to the top world timing of Camille Lacourt’s in 53.54, as they were followed by David Plummer in the third place in a time of 54.25. Ryan Murphy,
the 15-year-old, finished seventh in 55.56 and lowered the U.S age group record.
California’s Sean Mahoney, after a six month suspension for a positive dope test, won the men’s 200m breast-stroke in 2:11.47. He passed the previous world record of 2.12.12 by Eric Shanteau.
Chloe Sutton won the women’s 400m freestyle in 4:06.04 by defeating Katie Hoff, who came in a time of 4:06.42. Kate Ziegler finished third in 4:06.94. All three top positions cleared the previous world record of 4:07.10 set by Lotte Friis in January.
Elaine Breeden won the women’s 200m butterfly in 2:08.60 followed by Audrey Lacroix in 2:10.06 and Kelly Nelson in 2:14.46. Breeden is now second in the early world rankings after Ellen Grandy with a 2:05.90.
Dana Vollmer and Jessica Hardy had a neck-to-neck competition in women’s 50m freestyle. Vollmer won in 25.09 against Hardy’s 25.10.
Jason Lezak, won the men’s 50m freestyle in 22.59, as the Trojan’s Ous Mellouli claimed the title for men’s 400m freestyle in 3:48.23. His timing was far above from his top ranked timing of 3:46.64.
