Michael Phelps captures Men’s 100m butterfly semi-final: Day six – 2011 FINA World Championships
Michael Phelps of USA won the top qualification spot into the finals of Men’s 100m butterfly, by conquering the semi-finals of same event on sixth day of the 2011 World Championships on Friday, July 29, in Shanghai, China.
Phelps, who won the 200m butterfly of the championships, proved his dominance in the 100m discipline, by reporting in a time of 51.47 seconds. His time was 1.65 seconds slower than the world mark of 49.82 seconds, owned by Phelps at the 2009 Rome World Championships.
He was trailed by Konrad Czerniak of Poland, who stayed just 0.07 seconds behind Phelps and touched the finishing wall in a second fastest time of 51.54 seconds. Phelps’s team-member, Tyler McGill was the third fastest swimmer to enter the final rounds,
as he stayed 0.02 seconds behind Czerniak and submitted a time of 51.56 seconds.
Takuro Fujii of Japan was the fourth best swimmer to reach the final rounds, as he remained 0.13 seconds behind third finisher and reported a time of 51.69 seconds. He was followed by Evgeny Korotyshkin of Russia, who stayed 0.08 seconds behind Fujii and
clocked a time of 51.77 seconds. In the meantime, Geoff Huegill of Australia showered his expertise to earn the sixth fastest qualification spot, as he stayed 0.08 seconds behind his preceding swimmer and touched the finishing wall to end his effort and clock
a time of 51.85 seconds.
He was followed by Jason Dunford of Kenya, who remained only 0.07 seconds behind Huegill and produced a seventh fastest time of 51.92 seconds. Joeri Verlinden was the final swimmer to secure his berth into the final round, as he stayed 0.05 seconds behind
his former finisher and reported on the finishing wall in a time of 51.97 seconds.
The arena enjoyed the superb efforts of all swimmers, whereas, Phelps expressed his desire of clinching the gold medal in the final rounds. Furthermore, these competitors will compete with each other in tomorrow’s second session to earn a podium finish in
the 100m butterfly swim.
