Michael Phelps clinches Men’s 100m Individual Medley title: 2011 FINA World Cup, Berlin
Fourteen-time Olympic champion, Michael Phelps sealed the Men’s 100m IM title due to his animated swimming effort on day one of the seven stop 2011 FINA World Cup series in Berlin, Germany, on Saturday, October 22.
Phelps beat Great Britain’s James Goddard and Australia’s Kenneth To by powering the finishing wall in a time of 51.65 seconds to triumph the 100m Individual Medley title. Meanwhile, Goddard won silver medal in a time of 52.05 seconds.
Kenneth To took home the bronze medal by hitting the finishing wall in an impressive time of 52.46 seconds. To was the gold medallist in 4x100m medley race at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games, in Singapore. Sergei Fesikov of Russia thrashed triple Commonwealth
medallist, Liam Tancock for fourth position by posting a time of 52.59 seconds, while Tancock had to settle for fifth place in a time of 53.30 seconds.
Markus Deibler of Germany claimed sixth position by submitting a time of 53.62 seconds, whereas, Yuma Kosaka of Japan picked seventh spot in a time of 53.75 seconds. Finally, the eighth position went to Russia’s Dmitry Zhilin in 53.85 seconds.
On the other hand, United States’ Missy Franklin notched Women’s 200m back-stroke title over her competitors by hitting the finishing wall in a time of 2 minutes and 00.03 seconds. Belinda Hocking of Australia secured silver medal by posting a thrilling
time of 2 minutes and 01.24 seconds, while Elizabeth Simmonds of Great Britain picked bronze title in a time of 2 minutes and 02.54 seconds.
Daryna Zevina of Ukraine performed well in the respective race and settled for fourth spot by posting a time of 2 minutes and 02.85 seconds. Meanwhile, Anastasia Zueva of Russia picked fifth spot by submitting a time of 2 minutes and 07.10 seconds and Jenny
Mensing of Colombia had to settle for sixth position in a mark of 2 minutes and 07.20 seconds.
Additionally, Kimberly Buys of Belgian earned seventh place honours by submitting an impressive time of 2 minutes and 08.29 seconds. Last, but not the least, the eighth position went to Canada’s Brooklynn Snodgrass in a time of 2 minutes and 09.53 seconds.
Michael Phelps impressed Berlin’s arena, while the gold medallists were honoured with cash prizes after the session’s completion. The next round of the 2011 FINA World Cup series is scheduled to take place in Singapore, from November 4-5.
